The Super Duty 455 was introduced to the press during Pontiac’s annual model line preview in the summer of 1972, and it was enthusiastically received due to its unique block, heads, rotating assembly, intake manifold, and carburetor.

Interior Features:

Pontiac’s engineering team didn’t hold back in the 1970s, especially when designing the interior. While the coupe’s insignia may be considered bold, and its horsepower rating might seem relatively modest compared to earlier muscle cars, the design of the Super Duty stands out. The SD is equipped with all-original interior components including the seats, carpet, headliner, and door panels. A black Formula steering wheel spins around a fixed steering column, offering access to an engine-turned instrument panel with the original 160 MPH speedometer, along with oil, water, RPM gauges, and a clock.

Exterior Features:

The 1974 Firebird was a pivotal year for the model. Pontiac managed to blend both style and functionality in its redesign to meet the new low-speed crash mandates. The front of the car boasts a black bar nose, with a standard screamin’ chicken emblem placed between clean headlights, clear parking lamps, familiar Pontiac grilles, and a road-hugging spoiler. The screamin’ chicken hood centers around an “SD-455” branded shaker, complemented by pristine greenhouse glass and bright stainless trim. The car’s clean sides feature traditional fender vents and correct fender flares, while at the back, a subtle spoiler and clean taillights are highlighted by chrome exhaust tips and a second black bar bumper. This example is believed to be finished in its original Cameo White paint.

Engine & Performance:

The engine is the heart of any muscle car, and the Super Duty doesn’t disappoint. The SD-455 is a hand-built powerhouse, featuring significantly reinforced components. The matching numbers SD-455 engine carries a 490132 casting number with a January 09, 1974 casting date, behind a correct “W8” engine stamp and matching partial VIN. Atop the engine sits a 850 CFM Rochester Quadrajet carburetor with the correct Pontiac intake, ensuring high-flow air and fuel mixture for exceptional acceleration. The engine breathes through a traditional Trans Am induction system, with fresh Packard TV R Suppression cables and an efficient leak-free radiator. The engine bay is show-ready, finished in Pontiac Turquoise all the way from the intake to the oil pan, with the fenders, firewall, and hood covered in GM Satin Black.

Transmission & Suspension:

Behind the Super Duty motor, the car is equipped with a Borg Warner T10 4-speed manual transmission (casting number 1304065903 and partial VIN) that sends power to a durable 10-bolt rear end. The car rolls smoothly on a set of Pontiac Rally II wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires (245/60R15), ensuring that every drive is a joy. The undercarriage is clean and well-maintained, with solid floor pans and a road-ready stance.
