Dick’s Classic Motors is proud to present this 1978 Chevrolet Corvette Official Pace Car edition for sale. The 1978 Corvette Indy 500 Limited Edition Pace Car Replica editions featured a distinctive Black/Silver 2-tone paint with a red pinstripe, adding over $4,300 to the car’s price. Production was limited, with one Pace Car Replica produced for every Chevrolet dealership, and only 6,502 built in 1978.
Originally, Chevrolet had planned a small production of only 300 Pace Car Replicas, capitalizing on the Corvette’s role as the official pace car for the Indy 500. However, due to growing demand, production was ramped up, making these iconic cars more widely available. Now, 46 years later, many of these replicas have been driven into the ground, left to rust, or sun-faded. This one stands out as a well-maintained example.
Inside the cabin, the Pace Car Replicas didn’t receive special treatment compared to other Corvettes of the era, but this one features recently reupholstered silver seats. The door panels and carpet are believed to be original to the vehicle, along with the 1978 speedometer showing a 140 MPH top speed. Additional factory gauges include tachometer, fuel, temp, oil, and battery indicators. The original factory radio is in the trunk. Also, look for the 25th Anniversary limited Corvette badge just below the shift column, exclusive to the 1978 Corvettes. This model also comes equipped with removable glass roof panels for open-air driving.
The standout feature of this Pace Car Replica is the unique black-and-silver paint scheme—one of the few options that were exclusive to the Pace Car edition in 1978. The two-tone paint includes black on the upper half and silver on the bottom, separated by a thin red stripe. This Corvette has undergone a full repaint within the last 6 years, ensuring it looks stunning.
Under the hood is the 350 cubic inch L48 small-block V8 engine producing 185 horsepower, paired with an automatic transmission. The Rochester four-barrel Quadrajet carburetor feeds the engine, delivering smooth performance. The AC system has been converted to R134a, but it currently needs servicing as the AC does not blow cold air. The popup headlights are fully functional, as well as all interior and exterior lights. This Corvette is rolling on new Goodyear tires (P255/60R15).
